It's taken me a little while to pull this together as my world has been a whirlwind for a month at work and at home. But I've finally compiled some of my favorite pictures from opening day at the new Skatepark here in downtown Eugene.
So let's just start here... Mark Scott, skatepark designer and lead contractor, also known as 'Red' in the skating world. Taking a break from skating his new park - a little music, a little coffee, and a big smile.
Before the fence gates opened to the public, Mark and his team of pro-skaters, co-conspirators and concrete shredders took to the park to try it out. Mark is an incredible skater himself - check it out.
These people defy gravity - and the athleticism is amazing.
This is Elias in the kidney bowl.
And right around 2:30 things started heating up outside the gates - we had a lot of very excited and very happy people waiting patiently for 3:00. And when they finally opened, people flooded in. It was controlled chaos.
This is Drew - and for many reasons, this park is, in my mind, dedicated to him. His mom was our most devoted fundraiser, project booster and overall rockstar in the community on this project.
The media was there in force. Reporters, TV and Radio, video cameras, go-pros, regular cameras, and lots of smiles.
And, yes, bikes, scooters, roller blades, skateboards. This may be my most favorite photo I took that day.
Vendors pulled up in the on-street parking areas and sold snacks and drinks, skateboard parts and repairs.
I think a thousand people showed up that day and it's been rocking ever since. I went out for a beer with my colleagues and before I went home I drove by the park one more time. It was raining, but the lights were on and the park was full.
I was a tearful one, to say the least. It's an overwhelming feeling to have had such a big hand in something that touches our community and has lasting impacts that are so big.
That's Honeygirl - she's amazing - and is helping to select mural artwork for the bridge pillars. Stay tuned for more on that because it will also be, well, epic.
